Teammates Needed / Late fee soon STW AR entry fees go up after April 20th (see s-t-w.org to register). We also have some people trying to develop or start their team. Join a team!!! Teammates Needed My teammate Matt Lindner and I (Team Jabberwocky) need a third - we are doing the elite race again this year. I would classify us as an average to above average team that likes to race hard and expects to finish the race within the allotted time, probably in the middle of the pack. Know of anyone? If possible, a good navigator would be a plus!!!! Thanks, Clay Driggers [CDriggers@furmanco.com] I'm interested in doing the sport division adventure race in May at Baker Creek State Park but have been unsuccessful in raising a team. I would be interested in joining a team if there is one that is in need of a teammate. I live in Columbia, SC and I've done about four previous adventure races and consider myself middle of the pack, not the fastest but not the slowest. My three goals are to not get hurt, finish the race, and finish the race before the awards ceremony :) Single gender or co-ed doesn't matter to me. If you know of a team looking for a teammate for which I would be suitable, please let me know. Thanks. Perry Simpson [psimpson@sc.rr.com] Elite: I just heard from our friend. He cannot race. So, Meg and I are actively looking for a competitive teammate to fill out our team. Nav experience is not necessary. If you know of anyone, could you pass my name on? I appreciate it. Hopefully I will see you on May 6 (with a complete team). Thanks. Jeremy Weis [jeremy_weis@yahoo.com] Elite: We'd like to find a third wheel for our team....we don't plan on winning but we are definitely motivated and wanna finish the race competitively (not last). We (male & female) are looking to enjoy the race, but not in a type "A" personality way. This race is in preparation for another one in Oct more along the lines of the elite class but not as long. Don't care if we have a male or female for the third person as long as they can laugh, take sarcasms and push themselves but not at the exclusion of everything else. The 2006 Off Road assault on Mount Mitchell is set for July 23rd. Rain or Shine. The beast is back with a peleton style start that takes you from the Gateway Musuem in Old Fort with about 5 miles of rolling pavement to the climb up Gated Old 70 where riders will begin to seperated by the 4 mile climb. Up the 12 switchbacks of Kitsuma and back down 4 miles of narrow ridge running singletrack to some more rolling paved road passing Andrews Geyser on left to Graphite and your 1st checkpoint. From Graphite you'll climb up a steep eroded gravel road bed to cross a set of railroad tracks and the start of some nice gently rolling singletrack that quickly becomes a mean climb of unrelenting switchbacks up to Star Gap. >From Star Gap you'll descend to Jarret Creek Road, a old grassy road bed that rolls along the edge of the mountains sidehill style. Lots of rolling ups and downs with a eventual downhill to checkpoint # 2 at the beginning of Curtis Creek Rd. Some call it the climb of death or the climb of hell but whatever you call it know that Curtis Creek road climbs from about 1500 ft to 4100 ft in a 9 mile stint. Check Point # 3 lys at the top waiting for the wearied souls on the Blue Ridge Parkway. About 3 miles of gravel road decending brings you to another 5-6 mile gravel road climb back to the Parkway and checkpoint # 4. A little more then a mile of a gentle climb on the Parkway brings you the entrance to Heartbreak Ridge. There is a short 200 yd hike a bike up the side of the mountain that brings you to a beautiful meadow, a quick left, a quick right and your descending down the 7 mile long Heartbreak Ridge. This trail is pulse pounding as you fly down the mountain descending from a little over 5,000 ft to around 1500 ft on super skinny singletrack that hangs on to the edge of the mountain with rhododundren and Mountain Laurel on guard to catch you from a plunge if you get to close to the edge.. Heartbreak Ridge T's into Star Gap where you'll take a right and get retribution on the long switchback climb you did earlier by a fun, fast descent down it. Check point # 5 sits at Graphite and is the same check point as # 1. >From here you'll climb up the gravel Mill Creek Road for 4 miles and then on to Kitsuma again. Up the 12 switchbacks of Kitsuma again where we can assume most riders will have to hike a bike this time around and another fast descent of skinny singletrack to the Old Fort Picnic area. 5 miles of rolling pavement and your Highlands Ale awaits.
