Well this area is really pretty big (spread out) and there are a lot
of decent places to train. I'll list out a few here:

1. Umstead (entrances off Harrison road on I-40 and off US 70)

This is where we meet the most as it is somewhat central
and there are miles of offical gravel roads for biking and
trails for running. It also connects to both Lake Crabtree
and Shenk Forrest for more official trails. And finally
there are unofficial mtn bike trails such as Rocky Road
and Sludge. So you can easily get in an all day workout there
and not hit the same sections often.

2. Sharron Harris Lake (Exit 89 on US 1 south)

Decent mtn bike trails and hiking trails. There have been
     several sprint races held here.

3. Eno River in Durham

4. Falls Lake (New light, Beaver Creek?)

5. If you want to venture out further, Uhwarrie is a decent day
trip with lots of hiking trails and mtn bike trails.

I live in Pittsboro so when I train by myself I hit these public places:

1. Vista Point (6 miles of relatively flat hiking trails)

2. New Hope (6 miles of relatively hillyy hiking trails)

3. TLC White Pines (3-4 miles of hilly trails)

4. The overgrown trails along the Haw river, both north and
     south of 64.

5. Paddling on Jordan lake

And I hit a lot of paved roads as well as some unofficial places to
interconnect these. :-) One of the best places to bike that is only
open for the month of January is the Soup Bowl trails.
